I like to consider myself a lifelong learner and make an effort to keep expanding my horizons.
Recently, I was asked what I’d recommend for a brand new SE to learn and get up to speed quickly. I figured I’d share the list in case another rising SE can benefit too.
What would you add to the list?
SE Books
- The Trusted Advisor Sales Engineer - Holistic approach to SE excellence
- Demonstrating To Win! - The gold standard in demo habits
- Sales on Rails: A Sales Engineer’s Framework for Better Selling - Solid primer on sales and selling but oriented toward SEs
- The Six Habits of Highly Effective Sales Engineers - Foundational skills that are great for every new SE or to reinforce years of experience. Great live workshop and team-building experience too
SE Podcasts
Professional Groups and Workshops
- PreSales Collective - Webinars and a very lively Slack community
- SE Nation / SE NY - Webinars and in-person events in NYC and a few other cities
- SE Leadership Institute - Individual Contributor (IC) and SE leader workshops. I attended the leadership one and expanded my horizons
Of course, SEs are part of the Sales team and are ultimately measured on the ability to help close deals. So it’s important to have a strong foundation in sales too.
